Twogaa Sunday Post – 8.19.19 (Onward Christian Soldiers)

Submitted by Diana Roberts on August 18, 2019

Onward Christian soldiers!

Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus

Going on before.

Christ the royal Master, Leads against the foe; forward into battle,

See his banner go!

Onward Christian soldiers!

Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus,

 going on before.

At the name of Jesus

Satan’s host doth flee;

On then, Christian soldiers, On to victory!

Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise:

Brothers, lift your voices,

Loud your anthems raise!

Like a mighty army

Moves the Church of God:

Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod;

We are not divided,

All one Body we ----

One in faith and Spirit,

One eternally.

Stanzas 4 & 5

Written in the 19th century, probably more as a march for children, today is quite popular among evangelical and TV churches. It also expresses today the core view of religious right leaders and political leaders such as President Trump and his religious advisers. Trumps right-wing Evangelical Advisory Board stick with him despite his moral faults because politically, he gives them what they want: far-right judicial appoints through-out the judiciary, attacks on legal abortion, restrictions on LGBTQ rights, a self-proclaimed defense against the imaginary “War on Christmas” (Remember the Puritans outlawed Christmas celebrations under their theology) and policies that foster discrimination and racism under the guise of “religious freedom.” It is a war against secular government and anyone who is not a Christian or Christians who believe this is not the right approach.

So much for the First Amendment and separation of religion and state.
